Bone Mineral Density Testing

For your convenience, we are now able to offer osteoporosis screening in our main office. Osteoporosis is a loss of calcium density in bone that causes bones to collapse or fracture under minimal stress.

Early detection can be easily done by measuring bone mineral density.  The amount of calcium in critical bones such as your back or your hips is an indicator of your risk to have a fracture from minimal trauma.  This measurement is quickly and painlessly done by a DEXA Scan.

Women who complete menopause or have hormone deficiency are likely to benefit.  Also those who have had fracture, have noticed curving of the back, and have a family history of hip, wrist or back fractures should consider this test.

Men with low testosterone levels are also at risk, as are patients taking long term steroids, thyroid hormones, some anti-convulsant medicine, and some chemotherapy. Risk factors for both men and women include smoking, excessive alcohol use and limited weight-bearing exercise.

An evaluation for osteoporosis includes an examination by your primary care doctor, x-rays, blood and urine screening tests.  The DEXA scanners such as the one at Orthopaedic Associates of Augusta can detect low bone mineral density (BMD).  This test, along with a medical evaluation, can lead to treatment to reverse, slow or prevent loss of calcium from your bones.

Treatment for osteoporosis includes taking calcium, a regular exercise program and certain medications.  Medicines now available include hormone replacement, calcium and bisphosphonate alendronate (Fosamax).  Your orthopaedic and primary care doctors work together on the detection and treatment of osteoporosis.
